Massage Gun Therapy (Percussive Therapy)
A massage gun is a handheld device that uses rapid, repetitive, and deep pulses to deliver a form of massage therapy. The principle is to use pressure and vibration to stimulate muscles, increase blood flow, and provide pain relief.
Mechanism of Action
Percussive therapy works primarily by physically stimulating the tissue and the nervous system:
• Deep Percussion: The gun head delivers a high-frequency “thumping” or “hammering” motion that penetrates deeper than traditional vibration, targeting the muscle belly and fascia.
• Neurological Reset (Pain Relief): The rapid and intense stimulus overloads the sensory receptors, which effectively disrupts the pain signal being sent to the brain, providing immediate relief and promoting a relaxation response.
• Increased Circulation: The intense, localized pressure boosts blood flow to the area. This increased circulation delivers essential nutrients and oxygen while helping to flush out metabolic waste products like lactic acid, which contributes to soreness.
